Hacked?

Think you've been hacked? Start here.

Take a breath. Most break-ins at small businesses can be contained, and the first steps are simple. Do the five things below, then call or text us.

What to do right now

In this order. None of it needs any technical skill.

  1. Disconnect the affected computer

Turn off its Wi-Fi or unplug its network cable. That keeps whatever is happening from reaching the rest of the office.

  2. Don't turn it off

Leave it on and don't restart it. What is running right now is often the best record of what happened.

  3. Don't pay anyone

Not a ransom note, not a pop-up asking you to call a support number, and not a caller who says they are from Microsoft or your bank.

  4. Write down what you saw and when

The message on the screen, the email someone clicked, and the time you noticed. A phone photo of the screen is perfect.

  5. Call or text us

Tell us what happened and which computers or accounts are involved. We'll tell you what happens next and what it costs.

Incident triage, $600 flat

Triage covers up to 3 hours of our time. We figure out what happened, contain it, change the passwords and shut off the access that matter, and give you a written summary you can hand to your insurance company.

We start the same day when your call or text comes in before 3 pm on a business day, Monday through Friday, otherwise the next business day. If the work runs past the first 3 hours, the rest is $150 an hour, quoted first.

This is not a 24 hour service

Nobody here is on call overnight. Emergency work outside support hours is $200 an hour with a 2 hour minimum, and only when we are able to take it. If your cyber insurance policy has a claims hotline, you can call it at any hour.

What we can and can't promise

We can't guarantee that your data comes back or that nothing was taken. Nobody honest can promise that in the first few hours.

We can tell you what we found and what to do next, in writing, in words you can follow.

Your cyber insurance is the place a loss gets covered. We'll help you file, with the summary and the timeline the insurer asks for. If you don't carry cyber insurance yet, the same summary shows what to fix so it doesn't happen again.

Call or text now

The fastest way to reach us is a call or a text. If you'd rather write it down, book a call or use the form below.
